As part of the Brexit deal struck between the UK and EU on 24 December, the UK will become part of the EU’s new framework program for research and innovation, Horizon Europe. The program will run from this year until 2027 and currently has a budget of over 144 Billion dollars/95B euros -- which is good news for clinical studies in the UK.
The UK’s involvement is a continuation of their participation in the previous Horizon program (running 2014-2020.) Under that program, researchers and biopharma companies in the UK benefited greatly from the funding -- for instance, a project from the University of Oxford researching a malaria vaccine received $24 M.
A significant portion of the funding from the previous Horizon program helped several UK Bio-Pharma companies advance their clinical studies and medical technologies.
As members of the program, the UK will get equivalent access to the fund as the EU, and have the eligibility to lead projects. The program’s main focus will be on oncology, with fighting cancer being one of the primary goals the EU has set out for the next few years.
With the UK’s continued participation granting them access to funds, collaborations, and networks, the program should progress medical technologies significantly.
