Retinol is one of the most popular ingredients in skincare, touted for its antiaging benefits. Retinol clinical trials have revealed significant effects of both natural and synthetic retinoids on markers of photo aging. Today, we’ll overview some of the clinical evidence for retinoids and look at our own retinol clinical trials.
Clinical Evidence
There are many clinical studies on various retinoid products, and the consensus seems to be that retinoids are effective ingredients in protecting the skin from photoaging. It is important to note the difference between intrinsic/chronological skin aging and photoaging. Intrinsic skin aging is inevitable and occurs over time as the skin naturally loses elasticity and cell turnover slows. This is not likely affected by retinol products, unlike photoaging (damage that occurs from cumulative UV exposure).
A recent literature review suggests retinoids are some of the most promising agents for preventing premature aging, namely when delivered through tretinoin. However, many forms of tretinoin are irritating to the skin, and dermatologists have shifted to recommending less harsh products such as adapalene.
