3 Clinical Trials to watch this Summer

As we enter the second half of 2021, new clinical trials are popping up that are worth keeping an eye one. Today, we round up a few notable trials that will either be starting or releasing results over the coming summer months.

Covid-19 Booster Vaccine Study

The Cov-Boost study has just just announced in May their plans to recruit 2,800 healthy participants across the globe to receive a third booster shot of their Covid-19 vaccine. The study is taking place across 16 sites, with the hopes of determining the safety and efficacy of a booster shot program, and to determine how the different types of Covid-19 vaccines might interact with each other in cases of mixed-vaccination.

MDMA Therapy for PTSD

A recent study by Mitchell et al., published in Nature this past month showed promising results for the use of MDMA in treatment resistant PTSD. In the published study, the authors state “These data indicate that, compared with manualized therapy with inactive placebo, MDMA-assisted therapy is highly efficacious in individuals with severe PTSD, and treatment is safe and well-tolerated, even in those with comorbidities.” The study saw no additional suicidality or adverse effects in the MDMA treated participants, and the results are highly encouraging for further research into the topic of psychoactive drugs for the treatment of severe mental illnesses.

AstraZeneca’s anifrolumab in SLE treatment

AstraZeneca has released results from its analysis of Phase III TULIP clinical trials that assessed anifrolumab in moderate to severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. The study demonstrated significant improvement in skin rash and arthritis symptoms of SLE, when compared to the placebo. Some adverse effects were reported, such as infections of the upper respiratory tract and bronchitis.
