Alkili shares data from ADHD Video game trial

Morgan Carpenter

Alkili Interactive has just published its findings from its STARS-Adjunct trial, which explored the efficacy of EndeavorRX, a video game therapy for kids with ADHD. The app and video game combo was approved in Europe and the US after a multi-centre, open label study last year.

The video game aims to improve patients’ ability to focus by challenging them to manage multiple competing tasks, and requiring the shift of attention between tasks. It employs standard, high-color graphics that most kids would be accustomed to seeing in other video games already. The therapy is intended for use on tablet devices.

The results found that after the first treatment period, children showed fewer impairments in daily activities and an overall reduction in their usual symptoms. Their improvements remained stable while off of the treatment, and improved again after a second treatment period of using the video game therapy. Half of the children showed a response after only one month, and 68% showed a clinical response after the second treatment phase. Further studies are necessary, as the research did not involve a double-blind control group, and excluded any children with serious comorbidities, including mood disorders which might skew results.

The results are even more promising because the trial showed improvement in both groups that were already being medicated on an ADHD stimulant, and those that weren’t. The study results come alongside the shifting tide in ADHD treatments toward behavioral interventions in aid of/instead of medication alone.
