The importance of a diverse patient pool

It is essential to study a diverse patient pool, as failure to do so hinders our ability to test the safety and efficacy of new treatments in minority populations. Treatment of minority patients based on results from non-inclusive studies may lead to unexpected side effects because of the differences in reactions to medicines or disease effects across different populations. Increased input from a diverse group of patients can help to mitigate these negative effects and result in more widely applicable clinical research.

The most recent FDA global participation in clinical trials report highlighted the low participation of Black or African American, as well as Asian populations in clinical trials. These groups are often underrepresented, due to a range of factors including a lack of education about clinical trials and a lack of awareness about trial opportunities, compared to other populations.

This disparity can be improved by lessening the patient burden for minority participants, namely through increasing the reach of clinical trial education and communicating clearly the plans and designs of the study protocol.

Clinical research sites could also strive to employ Principal Investigators that are representative of a broader population, and include research materials that have been translated into the language of the patient population.
