Are Ginseng supplements backed by clinical trials?

Ginseng, a squat plant with fleshy roots, has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. The herb is renowned for its potential as a natural healer, and today we’ll investigate some of its health claims.

Health Claims

Ginseng contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may provide health benefits. Its applications range from healing gut health to improving skin symptoms such as eczema and acne.

The herb is largely used in teas and tinctures, often accompanying other healing ingredients such as ginger and green tea extracts.

The Evidence

Some test-tube studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the two primary compounds in ginseng: ginsenosides and gintonin. These studies found it beneficial in improving the symptoms of eczema, as well as in lowering certain markers of inflammation in athletes.

Ginseng may also help to improve fatigue and tiredness, even in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Further, given its antioxidant properties, ginseng has been shown to boost immune system responses in both human and animal studies.

There are also studies that suggest ginseng may help to lower blood sugar in people with and without diabetes. However, it should be used with caution, and diabetics are advised to consult their doctors and monitor their blood sugar levels if they choose to pursue ginseng alongside their usual medication and treatment plan.

The Verdict

Ginseng appears to be a fairly beneficial natural supplement that may grant your diet additional antioxidants and provide you with anti-inflammatory effects. The herb is fairly easy to incorporate into your diet, and can be eaten raw steamed, or found in many herbal tea blends at your local supermarket.

Ginseng acts similarly to ginger in stir-fries and soups and can be an exciting addition to old favorite recipes.
