Hawaiian Spirulina Supplements: Clinical Evidence

Hawaiian spirulina has started popping up in natural supplements, and even on the ingredient lists of smoothie shops and juice bars. The superfood actually comes from algae, grown best in the sunny waters of Kailua-Kona Hawaii. It’s associated with a variety of supplement health claims, including immune system support and even cardiovascular health.

Health Claims

Spirulina is an impressive source of essential nutrients, boasting complete protein as well as high levels of enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and non-essential amino acids that all greatly support health. Because of its density of beneficial components, the health claims arising from Hawaiian Spirulina largely center around the immune system.

Spirulina is said to detoxify the body, in part due to its phytonutrients (these include things like chlorophyll, which are said to help filter toxins from the body.) There are also claims about spirulina’s ability to remove excess amounts of heavy metals in the body, including mercury and aluminium. These have been linked in some research to chronic illnesses and general disruptions to the immune system.

The Evidence

As is the case with many natural supplements, the research on Hawaiian Spirulina is somewhat limited by small sample sizes and non-randomized designs.

However, there have been a few randomized-controlled trials and systematic reviews which point to the efficacy of Spirulina in improving a variety of health concerns. These studies follow the use of Spirulina as a dietary supplement by NASA to help support immune function in astronauts. They amount to a convincing body of literature in favor of the algae’s useful properties and potential antiviral effects.

Similarly, the evidence supports Spirulina’s anti-inflammatory effects, which may aid the cardiovascular system in regulating blood flow and blood oxygen levels, as well as work to prevent blood clots.

Overall, the use of Spirulina seems to be safe for most people and may be a valuable addition to an otherwise balanced, varied diet. As always, consult your doctor before beginning any new supplements, particularly if you have any existing health conditions.
