Women’s Health Week: Supplements for Menopause

This week, we’ll focus on women’s health and the many natural supplements currently in development to support women of all ages. Menopause symptoms in particular are a popular subject of supplement health claims research, as there is evidence that some natural ingredients and dietary shifts might reduce discomfort in women experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, or other symptoms. Today, we’ll overview some of the most common ingredients in supplements for menopausal and post-menopausal women.

Black Cohosh

This North American plant may offer relief from hot flashes and night sweats and is often incorporated into supplement blends aimed at menopause symptoms. The ingredient may affect imbalances in estrogen that arise during menopause and lead to uncomfortable symptoms.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are frequently recommended as part of a plant-based diet because they tout a high quantity of lignans, a compound that can help regulate hormones. While the ingredient isn’t evidenced to aid any specific menopause symptoms, it’s often included in supplements for women as a tool to balance hormones and strengthen the immune system.

Calcium

Following menopause, many women experience a drop in hormone levels that if left unchecked can lead to the loss of bone mass. The amount of calcium needed by women 51 and over increases by around 200 miligrams a day, which can be challenging to work into daily diets. While women should strive to get adequate calcium in their meals, a supplement of no more than 500mg can help to fill the gap.

Red Clover

Red clover is often celebrated for its natural benefits on the immune system and hormone levels, so it’s no wonder that the herb has been widely used as a home remedy for menopause symptoms. While this herb is used by many women for its hormone-balancing effects, there is little solid evidence that can back up the folk health claims. More research is needed before the ingredient will be seen in common supplement blends, but it is still available in tinctures and teas for now.
