Anti-Aging skincare: Facts Vs. Myths
A significant portion of the skincare industry focuses on anti-aging products. Any ingredients that offer blurred imperfections, reduced fine lines, or minimized age-spots rise to stardom quickly and can often be written about as though they are the fountain of youth. Today, we’ll take a closer look at the health claims surrounding anti-aging skincare and separate fact from fiction.
Myth: Moisturizers prevent visible aging
While moisturized skin does often look, and more importantly feel better, hydration is not a miracle cure for wrinkle prevention. Some moisturizers offer plumping effects that may help to mask the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but they do not work to prevent further aging or any kind of accumulating sun damage.
Instead of relying on moisturizing alone, you should ensure you are using a good SPF each day and opt for products that have antioxidants in them -- which studies have shown may actually slow down skin’s aging.
Myth: More expensive products are required to see results
As with other skincare steps, anti-aging products do not need to be purchased at jaw-dropping prices in order to be effective. The truth is, there are plenty of drugstore products that offer the same active ingredients for a fraction of the cost.
Myth: Retinol is necessary to prevent wrinkles
While retinol in smaller doses is a great tool for encouraging skin cell turnover, it is not essential to anti-aging routines. If you are using retinol, it’s best not to overdo it. Dermatologists generally recommend avoiding retinol use in the summer months, as it can lead to photosensitivity and increased sun damage. It is also important to avoid layering on multiple retinol products, which is a recipe for irritation and potentially skin damage - less is more with retinol and many other anti-aging products.
