Skincare Clinical Testing: What to Expect

When you get involved with a skincare clinical trial, you may have some concerns about the process of testing out a new product. It can be intimidating to deviate from your usual routine, especially if you struggle with chronic skin conditions such as acne or eczema. However, if you’ve been recruited into a skincare clinical trial, you are in good hands and can anticipate a smooth process (especially if you’re in one of our trials!) Today, we’ll take a closer look at what you can expect when volunteering for skincare clinical testing.

Enrollment

As with most other kinds of clinical trials, you’ll usually begin a skincare trial by sharing information about your skin concerns, s well as your overall health history. This happens before you can enrol, so you can take comfort in the fact that you would not be getting involved in a study if the research team thought your individual skincare issues or needs were incompatible with the product.

It’s important at this stage to also share your usual skincare regime, and any products you use. Note that some products cannot be used in conjunction with specific ingredients, so it’s vital that you’re honest and thorough when reporting your current routine -- this will help to prevent negative skin reactions or increased sensitivity.

The Ramp Up

Skincare clinical testing typically involves a ramp-up period, where you’ll start with a smaller-than-usual application of the product. This usually involves a patch test on a small area of skin, such as the inner forearm to ensure your skin does not have a reaction to the new product. Then, you may start by working the product into your routine a few days a week, then once a day, before building up to using it day and night.

Upkeep

As with any clinical trial, it’s very important to stick with the instructions and the timeline provided to you by the study organizers. You’ll use the product exactly as directed and strictly adhere to the scheduled surveys and any progress photos you may be asked to take.

Following the study timeline is the only way for us to collect reliable data. Think of it this way: As a customer, you want to know that a skincare product will work exactly as directed if you follow the instructions provided. These instructions are developed in the research stages, and your data helps to prove whether or not they work according to plan!

Final stages

As you near completion, we’ll guide you on ceasing the product testing and any final information we need to collect from you. You will usually take an exit survey, and answer some questions about your experience with the product as well as with us as your CRO! If compensation or thank you gifts are provided, you will receive these only after completing all exit materials.
