Jojoba oil has long been used in skincare, and for good reason! The healing oil originates from the nut of the Jojoba plant, spanning North American desert climates. There is a wealth of evidence in favor of jojoba oil’s potential as a treatment for acne, wrinkles, and dry skin.
Jojoba oil is highly moisturizing due to its status as a humectant, meaning it actively works to attract water to the top layer of your skin. This makes it a great addition to skincare routines targeting dryness, and its gentle and nonirritating to sensitive skin types.
By restoring moisture to the skin, jojoba oil also works to protect the skin’s natural barrier. In turn, this deters blemishes and damage. It also works as an effective solution to dandruff and other scalp concerns.
Jojoba oil is naturally antibacterial in a similar manner to coconut oil. It has been shown to kill off some bacteria and fungi, such as those causing E-coli infections. Because of these properties, jojoba oil helps to prevent acne and other breakouts that are caused by a buildup of debris and trapped bacteria on the surface of the skin. Additionally, Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it's similar in makeup to the sebum of your skin and is therefore much less likely to clog your pores and cause breakouts.
In addition to caring for the surface of the skin, which can work to slow signs of aging, jojoba oil may also promote collagen synthesis. Collagen is one prominent type of protein in your skin, hair, nails, and joints. The levels of collagen in your skin decrease as you age, contributing to wrinkles and a decrease in skin elasticity. Studies have shown that applying a topical antioxidant such as jojoba oil may help to stimulate collagen production, slowing the appearance of skin aging.
