Tips for dealing with Winter Breakouts

With the cooler months comes ultra-rich hydrating skincare products, which while moisturizing, can often sit heavily on your skin. This transition period into winter can result in more breakouts, and finding a balance between preventing them and stripping the skin can be difficult. Today, we’ll focus on the best ways to prevent breakouts while still moisturizing the skin in drier months.

Finding The Right Toner

A gentle astringent or anti-inflammatory toner can be a great choice for the winter months in order to prevent breakouts. After cleansing, a toner that contains ingredients such as witch hazel, tea tree oil, or another mild toner can work to reduce the amount of bacteria and sebum built up on your skin and ensure your pores have been deeply cleansed.

If you are particularly concerned with dryness, you can always use the toner as a regional spot treatment and concentrate it on your T-zone or other areas where you are prone to breaking out.

Treatment Serums

After your toner, it is ideal to deliver your skin with an extra dose of moisture by using a serum that will hydrate your skin without sitting too heavily on its surface and potentially clogging pores. Fast-absorbing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and squalane can be great choices for lasting moisture that won’t suffocate acne-prone skin.

Moisture without Weight

At the end of your skincare routine, it is still important to moisturize even if you are acne-prone. For daytime use, a lightweight moisturizer with tea-tree oil or aloe as a base can provide hydration while allowing you to maintain a relatively matte finish.

In the evenings, don’t be afraid to try something a little more richly hydrating, just be sure to use a non-comedogenic formula that will be less likely to clog your pores.

General Advice

With blemish-prone skin, it is especially important to allow plenty of time for products to absorb into the skin in between skincare steps. While this does take a bit longer, it can help you to avoid piling products on one after the other and creating excess oiliness.

Additionally, it will make a huge difference to keep an eye on how often you wash any fabrics that frequently come into contact with your face. The towels you use to dry your skin as well as your pillowcases are a great place to start.
